Members make a difference
The garden couldn’t exist without the help of our members; their contributions go towards the upkeep of this unique space, which is open 365 days a year, and free for everybody to enjoy. Become a member, participate in garden community work for a minimum of four hours each month, and get to know your neighbors as you help with weeding, planting flowers, and sweeping leaves. There’s no better way to feel involved.

RULES FOR GARDEN MEMBERS
This is your garden. Help keep it the best in New York.
1. Garden dues need to be collected by the first of April of each calendar year.
2. Work on individual plots should begin by the first weekend in April and must be substantially completed by the middle of May.
3. Any plot that is not kept planted, weeded and maintained between May 30 and September 30 will be considered neglected. If there is no change in status within ten days after receipt of the notification the plot may be reassigned.
4. Each gardener shall be responsible for keeping the path area around his/her plot clipped, neat and clear of debris and overgrowth.
5. Each garden member is required to perform a minimum of four hours of mandatory garden work per month for the West Side Community Garden. This does not include work on a member’s own plot.
6. No construction is permitted around individual plots without prior board approval.
7. Only organic pesticides and herbicides are permitted.
8. Members are responsible for escorting their guests through the vegetable garden.
9. No one member can give away a vegetable plot. Plots that become vacant go to the next name on the chronological plot waiting list.
10. Harvest only from your own vegetable plot.
11. Members must close the vegetable garden gate and tool shed door when leaving.
12. Members who are away or ill for several weeks must notify the membership committee liaison about arrangements for the upkeep of their plot.
13. Tools must be replaced in the tool shed in designated areas.
14. During drought emergencies, all NYC water conservation rules must be followed.
15. All donations of trees, shrubs and plants must be planted only with permission and under the direction of the flower committee.
16. Pets must be well curbed before entering the garden area, firmly leashed and kept to the pathways.
17. No pigeons or squirrels shall be fed in any part of the West Side Community Garden.
18. Littering is not permitted in the garden.
19. Roller skating and skateboarding is prohibited in the garden. Bicycles and scooters shall be ‘walked’ on garden property.
20. Verbal and physical harassment is prohibited in the garden. Harassers will be expelled from the garden.
21. Stealing from the garden or from any member or visitor is prohibited and will be reported to the proper authorities.
